Mall of America History

The Mall of America is situated on the site of the old Metropolitan Stadium, where the Vikings and Twins played until the inauguration of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The teams left the Metropolitan Stadium in 1982. A commemorative plaque in Camp Snoopy sits wher the home plate used to be. One of the seats from the old Stadium was positioned in the exact location (including elevation) it occupied in the stadium and can be seen today in the mall. This was done to memorialize a 520 foot home run hit by hall-of-famer Harmon Killebrew on June 3, 1967. There are no parallel references to the Minnesota Vikings, though there has been talk of a statue of Armen Terzian.
The Bloomington Port Authority signed an contract in 1986 with the Ghermezian Organization, who had already worked on Canada?s largest mall West Edmonton Mall.
